The Metropolitan Baptist Church was established on Wednesday, October 24, 1917, under the leadership of Rev. C.L. Netherland. Born from a prayer meeting at the home of Mr. & Mrs. R. T. Bridgewater, our journey began with a devoted group of eighteen members. From our first home in a small frame building at 422 E. Oklahoma Street, God has guided our steps through periods of significant growth and change.
Under the guidance of visionary leaders, our church has flourished. Rev. J. H. Dotson led us through the difficult years of the Great Depression, and Dr. C. W. R. Johnson’s 35-year tenure saw the construction of a new educational building. In November 1993, we called Dr. Ray Owens to be our pastor, and his leadership has inspired a new era of excellence and expansion. We moved to our current campus on East 91st Street in March 2004, embracing a new name—The Met—and a renewed vision to be an intergenerational ministry that serves our city.
From a humble prayer meeting to a thriving campus, our story is one of faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment to God’s work.
Dr. Ray Owens has served as the senior pastor of The Met Church since 1993. With a heart for God and a passion for people, he has guided our congregation with wisdom, vision, and a “Spirit of Excellence.” His leadership has been instrumental in shaping our identity as “The Church That Cares,” fostering an environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered to grow in their faith.
Dr. Owens is a devoted husband to his wife, Dr. Christine Owens, and a proud father. Together, they have instilled a deep sense of family and community within The Met. Their shared commitment to service and discipleship is reflected in the warm, welcoming atmosphere you’ll find here. Under their guidance, The Met continues to be a beacon of hope and a resource for connection throughout Tulsa.
We are a church that is present in the challenges our community faces. Whether we are improving educational outcomes through literacy camps or partnering with housing initiatives to increase homeownership in North Tulsa, our goal is to be a source of solutions and a catalyst for positive change. We strive to be a welcoming home for progressive individuals, families, professionals, and new transplants to the city who seek the vibrant, intergenerational community we offer.
